January 18: Birthday of A. A. Milne (1882)

Prayer Idea

Pray for people who write literature for children.

History Note

A. A. Milne was born in London on January 18, 1882. His father ran a private school, which Milne attended. One of his teachers was H. G. Wells.

Milne worked as an author before serving in the military during World War I. During his career, Milne published a wide variety of articles, poetry, plays, novels, and nonfiction. However, he achieved his greatest success with poems and stories written for his son, Christopher Robin.

  • When We Were Very Young (1924)

  • Winnie-the-Pooh (1926)

  • Now We Are Six (1927)

  • The House at Pooh Corner (1928)

At the London Zoo, Christopher Robin was fascinated with a bear named Winnie who had come to England from Canada during World War I. The boy named his own teddy bear “Winnie,” which inspired the famous character in Milne’s stories.

The game of “Poohsticks” is inspired by a scene in The House at Pooh Corner. A bridge in the Ashdown Forest of England was associated with the Milne family. Originally built in 1907, the bridge has been rebuilt twice because of large numbers of tourists visiting the site to play Poohsticks. Photo by mountaintreks / Shutterstock.com.
