History Note
Lithuania was an independent empire in the late Middle Ages and joined with Poland in a commonwealth known as the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from 1569 to 1795.
Russia gained control of Lithuania in 1795. Lithuania regained its independence during the world wars of the 20th century but then came under the control of the Soviet Union. Lithuania finally reclaimed its independence on March 11, 1990. The country observes this date as the Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania.
Lithuania is a semi-presidential republic with both a president and a prime minister who share power. It has a population of 2.6 million. A large majority of citizens are Roman Catholic.

Vincas Kudirka composed the song “Lithuania, Our Homeland” in 1898, while Lithuania was under Russian control. It became the national anthem of an independent Lithuania in 1919.
