History Note
James (“Jimmy”) Stewart was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, on May 20, 1908.
Stewart studied at Princeton to become an architect. However, after going to New York with a friend, he started acting on Broadway. In 1935 he got the attention of MGM studios and began acting in movies. Stewart appeared in a variety of films during the 1930s.
When World War II came, Jimmy Stewart followed the example of his ancestors who had served in previous conflicts and enlisted as a private. He ended the war with the rank of colonel, having flown 20 combat missions over Germany with a B-24 squadron.
After the war, Stewart returned to making movies while also continuing to serve in the Air Force Reserves. He married Gloria Hatrick in 1949 and adopted her two sons, Ronald and Michael. Jimmy and Gloria had twin daughters, Judy and Kelly. Ronald was killed during the Vietnam War.
Jimmy Stewart continued to appear in films, had a television show, and wrote a book of poetry. He retired from the military as a Brigadier General and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Stewart died in 1997.
