July 2: Founding of the Salvation Army (1865)
Prayer Idea
Pray for people who are working to meet the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of their neighbors.
History Note
William and Catherine Booth established an organization in 1865 focused on serving the needs of the poor in London. They were supported by a group of Christian businessmen. On July 2, 1865, William preached to a crowd of people in a large tent in the East End of London. The Salvation Army traces its origin to this date.
In 1878 the organization changed its name from the Christian Mission to the Salvation Army as it began expanding its mission around the world. The Salvation Army became a distinct Christian denomination with a system of officers and uniforms based on military organization.
Over the years, members of the Salvation Army have been involved in providing practical help to people facing homelessness, food insecurity, natural disasters, addiction, and health challenges. Their work has spread to more than 130 countries.
William and Catherine’s son Bramwell (standing in car) became General of the Salvation Army after William’s death in 1912. Their daughter Evangeline (waving in car) helped to organize the Salvation Army in the United States and Canada. She later became General of the international organization.
