July 8: First Issue of The Wall Street Journal (1889)

Prayer Idea

Pray for journalists who write about economics to help people make informed decisions about business, investing, and other issues.

History Note

Charles Henry Dow, Edward Davis Jones, and Charles Bergstresser published the first issue of The Wall Street Journal on July 8, 1889. It had four pages of information and sold for two cents.

These three men had been working together for several years publishing news about the stock market. The Wall Street Journal focused on news related to finance and business, but it also included stories about sports and politics. In 1896 it began publishing the Dow Jones Industrial Average, a number that goes up and down each day reflecting the stock prices of specific companies.

Over the decades, the Journal created other editions in other regions and countries. The Journal now has three million digital subscribers and about 600,000 print subscribers. That is the largest of any U.S. newspaper in daily print circulation.

This is a portion of the front page of the first issue of The Wall Street Journal.
