History Note

Kiribati is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. It includes the Gilbert Islands, the Line Islands, and the Phoenix Islands spread over a large area. These islands have had a mix of Micronesian, Melanesian, and Polynesian settlers over the centuries.

Kiribati has a population of just over 100,000. About 95% belong to a Christian denomination. Missionaries first came to the islands in the 1850s.

In 2023 the government designated July 10 as Gospel Day to recognize the importance of Christianity to the country. People have celebrated with interdenominational services and cultural performances.

Gospel Day is the first of three back-to-back holidays in Kiribati. National Culture and Senior Citizens Day is on July 11. July 12 is the country’s national day, the date on which it officially gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1979.
