September 11: Roselle Helps Michael Hingson Escape the World Trade Center (2001)

Prayer Idea

Pray for people who are dealing with painful memories on difficult anniversaries.

History Note

On September 11, 2001, Michael Hingson was working on the 78th floor of 1 World Trade Center (the North Tower) in New York City. Michael was a sales manager for a technology company, preparing for a meeting. His guide dog, Roselle, was with him.

At 8:46 a.m. the tower shook because a plane had crashed into it. This was one of four deadly attacks that day. Hijackers crashed another plane into 2 World Trade Center (the South Tower) and a third plane into the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. Passengers disrupted hijackers on a fourth plane, which crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

Roselle calmly led Michael down 1,400 stairs to escape the North Tower as firefighters passed them going up. They exited the building just before the South Tower collapsed and about 30 minutes before the North Tower collapsed. Michael and Roselle finally reached safety in a subway station.

September 11, 2001, was a very dark day. The story of Roselle and Michael is a ray of light that shines in the darkness. Roselle died in 2011, but Michael continues to share their story. He is on a mission to help others be brave, overcome adversity, and move forward with faith in Christ.
