History Note
John G. Roberts Jr. was born in Buffalo, New York, on January 27, 1955. He grew up in Indiana before attending Harvard and getting his law degree there.
Roberts was a law clerk for Associate Justice William Rehnquist. He also worked in the White House and the Justice Department during the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. President George W. Bush appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2003.
When Sandra Day O'Connor retired from the Supreme Court in 2005, Bush initially nominated Roberts to replace her. After the subsequent death of Chief Justice Rehnquist, Bush decided to nominate Roberts for chief justice instead. The Senate confirmed him 78-22.
