History Note
Brett Kavanaugh was born in Washington, D.C., on February 12, 1965. He attended Yale College and Yale Law School.
He clerked for two federal judges and for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.
In the 1990s, Kavanaugh worked under Kenneth Starr in the Office of Solicitor General and the Office of Independent Counsel. After a few years in private practice, he worked as an assistant and advisor to President George W. Bush.
President Bush nominated Kavanaugh to be a federal judge in 2003, but the Senate blocked the nomination. Bush successfully appointed him to the federal bench in 2006. President Trump nominated him to the Supreme Court in 2018, and the Senate confirmed him 50-48.
Justice Kavanaugh and his wife have two daughters.
