January 7: Jean-Pierre Blanchard and Dr. John Jeffries Cross the English Channel in a Hot Air Balloon (1785)

Prayer Idea

Pray for pilots and air traffic controllers as they work to get air travelers safely where they are going.

History Note

A sheep, a duck, and a rooster were the first known living creatures to ride in a hot air balloon on September 19, 1783. After they landed safely, humans began experimenting with manned flights.

French balloonist Jean-Pierre Blanchard and American doctor John Jeffries attempted to cross the English Channel by air on January 7, 1785. After leaving England, they struggled to maintain altitude over the water. However, they successfully landed in France about two and half hours after departure.
