January 8: President Nixon Authorizes the Creation of Voyageurs National Park (1971)
Prayer Idea
Pray for National Park Service rangers as they protect historic and natural sites and serve visitors who come to see them.
History Note
The Ojibwe (also known as Chippewa) are an indigenous people group who have lived for centuries in the Great Lakes region of North America, in what is now Canada and the United States.
In the 1700s and 1800s, French-Canadian traders known as voyageurs came into Ojibwe territory to purchase beaver pelts from them for export to Europe.
Voyageurs National Park is the only U.S. national park named for a group of people. It protects 218,000 acres of lakes, forests, and streams in northern Minnesota—an area rich with natural beauty and cultural heritage.
