February 4: National Day of Sri Lanka

Prayer Idea

Pray for the people of Sri Lanka.

History Note

Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, near the coast of India. It is a presidential republic with a population of 22 million.

The country’s constitution says that the government must “protect and foster” Buddhism while also recognizing religious freedom. A majority of the population are Buddhists, but Sri Lanka has significant minorities of Hindus, Muslims, and Christians.

Colombo is the administrative capital of the country, while the nearby city of Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte serves as the legislative capital.

Sri Lanka celebrates its National Day on February 4. This was the date in 1948 when the country officially gained independence from the United Kingdom. Sri Lanka remains part of the Commonwealth, an association of nation states with historical ties to Britain.
