June 5: Denmark Celebrates Constitution Day

Prayer Idea

Pray for the people and government of Denmark.

History Note

The country of Denmark observes Grundlovsdag (Constitution Day) on June 5. On this date in 1849, King Frederik VII signed the country’s first democratic constitution, which ended the absolute monarchy, created the Rigsdagen (parliament), and separated government powers into three branches. The constitution has been amended in 1866, 1915, 1920, and 1953—always on June 5 in keeping with precedent.

Danes observe the day by raising the Danish flag, listening to speeches about government and democracy, and gathering for fællessang (collective singing).

The Kingdom of Denmark includes the part in Europe known as metropolitan Denmark and the autonomous regions of the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The population is about 6 million. About 70% are members of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church, although only a small percentage regularly attend services.
