June 6: National Day of Sweden

Prayer Idea

Pray for the people and government of Sweden.

History Note

The Kalmar Union united the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under one monarch from 1397 to 1523. In the 1520s Gustav Vasa led an independence movement among the Swedes. He was formally elected as King of Sweden on June 6, 1523.

On June 6, 1809, Sweden adopted its first national constitution. This document, called the Instrument of Government, began the process of changing Swedish government from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy.

Beginning in 1916, Swedes observed June 6 as Swedish Flag Day. In 1983 the parliament changed the name to National Day of Sweden. In 2005 this became an official public holiday.

The royal family often celebrates the day at Skansen, an open-air museum in Stockholm. Citizens display the country’s flag and sometimes dress in traditional costumes. The country also holds ceremonies welcoming new Swedish citizens.
